Conditions
From End The Cult
The book Introduction To Scientology Ethics[1] outlines the following Conditions of Existence. They are measured by the statistics of a person or an org. They are, from least to most desirable:
Condition of Confusion
The Condition of Confusion is the lowest condition, where "the being or area will be in a state of random motion. There will be no real production, only disorder or confusion." Being in the Condition of Confusion is "the basic cause of stupidity" in a person. There are simple and expanded Confusion Formulae.
Condition of Treason
A Scientologist staff member doesn't just have a post; s/he is that post, and is that post for as long as it is occupied is his/her "beingness".
The Condition of Treason is assigned to someone who "accepts a post or position and then doesn't function as it, will inevitably upset or destroy some portion of an org."
The condition is called called "Treason" because "a person in a group who, having accepted a post, does not know that he is a certain assigned or designated beingness is in Treason against the group."
The Treason Formula is "Find out that you are", meaning "do your job as assigned"
Condition of Enemy
An enemy of Scientology. The Enemy Formula is simply "Find out who you really are."
Condition of Doubt
A Condition of Doubt is when you can't make up your mind about an individual, group, org or project. The Doubt Formula is lengthy.
Condition of Liability
The Condition of Liability is the highest of the non-graphed Conditions. Being below the Condition of Non-Existence means "the being has ceased to be simply non-existent as a team member and has taken on the color of an enemy." Basically, anyone who is upsetting org life.
The Liability Formula includes the penance of delivering "an effective blow to the enemies of the group one has been pretending to be part of despite personal danger" and to "make up the damage one has done by personal contribution far beyond the ordinary demands of a group member."
Condition of Non-Existence
A person at a new post begins in a Condition of Non-Existence, because it is assumed no one yet knows who the new person is on that post.
When a person or org gets to this lower condition from a higher one, it means their statistics have dropped significantly. Any Condition lower than this is not graphed.
A person, group, org or country in the Condition of Non-Existence is to run the Non-Existence Formula, which includes finding out what is needed or wanted and to do, produce or present it.
Condition of Danger
A Condition of Danger is applied when an Emergency Condition has continued too long or when a statistic goes down steeply. When a person is in this condition, part of the Danger Formula is to "get in your own personal ethics by finding out what you are doing that is out-ethics and use self-discipline to correct it and get honest and straight."
Condition of Emergency
When a person or org's statistics are declining or unchanging they are in a Condition of Emergency. They're to apply the Emergency Formula which involves producing/advertising more, economizing, and stiffening discipline.
Condition of Normal
When a person's statistics are slightly up, they're in a Condition of Normal. They are to apply the Normal Formula, which includes changing nothing and light Ethics action should any be needed.
Condition of Affluence
A sharp line up on a graph means a Condition of Affluence. When in this condition one must run the Affluence Formula which includes paying every bill and not making any future commitments.
Condition of Power
When a person has been on a Condition of Affluence for a long time and then their statistical trend becomes a Condition of Normal, they are in a Condition of Power. The cause of reaching this condition is attributed to running the Affluence Formula.
The Power Formula includes not disconnecting from anyone.
Condition of Power Change
Condition of Power Change is the Condition of someone taking over the post that was in the Condition of Power. The Condition of Power Change Formula is to change nothing until you're familiar with everything. If you violate this, you risk bringing about an immediate Danger Condition.
