Disconnection is the Scientology Organization's "religious therapy" of separating a Scientologist from a person critical of Scientology, including friends and family.

While Disconnection exists, the Scientologist may not contact their friends or family members in any way, and any attempts to be contacted are cut off or intercepted. Individuals who have been Disconnected receive a notification originating from the Scientologist stating their intent to disconnect.

The concept from Scientology's standpoint is that these individuals are PTS and can hinder the progress of the Scientologist along the Bridge. By engaging in Disconnection, the individual is removed from a "corrupting environment".

In reality, Disconnection forces an individual to sever all ties with the outside world and rely entirely upon Scientology and Scientologists who reinforce the cult's values system and brainwashing methods. By removing any connection to reality, the individual is more easily brainwashed and subverted.

This is similar to methods used by small scale cults which rely entirely upon physical isolation in remote locations. Scientology is simply trying to legitimize these actions by claiming the disconnect came at the individual's behest. In fact, the Scientologist is typically pressured into engaging in Disconnection.
