The E-Meter or Hubbard Electropsychometer is a device which is used by Dianetic and Scientology "practitioners" which is Wheatstone Bridge that detects galvanometric resistance levels across the surfaces of a persons hands.

Development Process

The Electropsychometer originally called The Mathison Electropsychometer and was developed by chiropractor and off-beat Psychoanalysis practitioner Volney G. Mathison in 1942. According to Mathison's observation of dubious credibility, he determined through misapplication of Carl Jung theory and his own crackpot ideas that a subjects responses to unconscious and conscious stimulation or mental masturbation was directly proportional to the grip they inferred upon his device or anything in their hands at the time.

From the late 1940s up until around 1952, the E-Meter was a source of contention between Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and Volney Mathison according to the son of Hubbard's who once claimed in Pinellas County hearings on Scientology:

The Meter ran hot and cold with dad, it depended really on his control over the device and whether or not Volney would cough it up. Sometimes dad would demand royalties from Volney and then we'd lose it for a while and end up writing processes to audit without it.
