Engram
From End The Cult
This section presents something from L. Ron Hubbard's perspective. You may find it deviates strongly from actual fact. |
An Engram in Dianetics is
A mental image picture of an experience containing pain, unconsciousness, and a real or fancied threat to survival; it is a recording in the mind of something which actually happened to the preclear in the past which contained pain and unconsciousness, both of which recorded in the mental image picture called an engram.[1]
The Scientology Critical Information Directory describes it as:
A posited memory trace that remains after a moment of pain and unconsciousness. Hubbard didn't coin this word; it can be found in Webster's, and is part of the ISV, the International Scientific Vocabulary.[2]
The term engram itself was used by Hubbard following a suggestion by Joseph Winter. Hubbard used the terms "norn", "comanome" and "impediment" before deciding on Engram[3]. The introduction to Dianetics in Astounding Science Fiction (May 1950) makes use of the term norn.
