MEST (rhymes with west) is an acronym coined by L. Ron Hubbard standing for Matter Energy Space and Time. It is distinguished from Theta, which is the "spirit". It refers to the real world and the physical universe.

MEST is a versatile term in Scientology. For example, "MEST work", meaning chores typically involving construction and cleanliness of property, is assigned as punishment in the Rehabilitation Project Force.

In the upper Operating Thetan levels, a person is supposed to gain control over MEST by becoming exterior of his or her body and manipulating the universe without physical contact (telekinesis, more or less).
