Thetan
From End The Cult
When someone is first introduced to Scientology, they are taught that they're actually an immortal being called a Thetan. Properly pronounced "thay-tan", the Thetan is roughly equivalent to a soul; an entity that is born in one body, suriviving that body's death, and then being born in another body in another cycle of life. All seemingly soft, fuzzy, new-age stuff.
As one progresses higher up, one is taught how to remember their past lives. Using self-hypnosis, one imagines themselves in different eras in human history or in imaginary places such as in outer space civilizations. These are asserted as memories you, the "Theta Being", experienced in other bodies. The Thetan Being also can operate independent of the human body, or MEST body, with enough training.
As you progress up the Scientology bridge, you learn that the MEST universe is actually a creation within the Theta Universe, the indigenous universe of the Theta Beings. The Theta Beings are trapped within the MEST universe, as in a "Holodeck gone mad" scenario from Star Trek.
The concept of the Thetan allows for a depersonalization that enables Disconnection.
Thetan "Races"
Hubbard's racial prejudices played a role in his development of the Thetan. In addition to five MEST body "racial streams" (four of which he identifies as White, Yellow, Brown and Black), there are "12-15 Thetan races" here on Earth.[1] These include:
- The Snake Men; "He wants you to prove everything. Prove, prove, prove, prove"
- Fifth Invader Force People; "One of the Invader forces has this slogan that they... that the paymaster is sensation, and that’s all the pay there is as far as they’re concerned."
- Cat People; "Most of them are mad as hatters."
- Monitor people; "The female of that species we’ve decided to call the Merrimacks after that ancient battle."
